This week in the NBA, teams around the league started training camp on September 26th ahead of the 2023-24 season. As the recent drama between James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers organization has come to a head, James Harden was reluctant about joining the team for camp alongside Daryl Morey and new teammate, Kelly Oubre Junior, ultimately joining the camp late on October 4th as a full participant.
This drama between Harden and the 76ers organization started when Harden exercised his player option on June 29th and requested a trade. Harden wanted out of Philadelphia and made it very clear as to why.
"Daryl Morey is a liar, and I will never be a part of an organization that he's a part of," Harden said during an Adidas media event in China. "Let me say that again: Daryl Morey is a liar, and I will never be a part of an organization that he's a part of."
Following this statement, Harden was fined $100,000 by the league, which is now being disputed by the NBA Players Association. Although Harden was at one point as generational talent, securing a MVP and 3 consecutive scoring titles, at this point, he has proven to many that he is nothing but a drama-inducing nuisance to the 76ers organization at this point. However, with all of the recent negative news surrounding him, in addition to his recent change in style of play from a creative, game-changing scorer to a one-dimensional playmaker alongside Joel Embiid, the aging Harden's trade value is at an all-time low, making this an overall lose-lose situation for Philadelphia.
Although the 76ers are in a rough spot surrounding Harden trying to force his way out of the organization with very limited options surrounding what they can do to satisfy Harden's request, one thing they can do is create turmoil within the roster and make his stay as uncomfortable as possible, forcing him to be okay with less desirable destinations and expediting the process. Which is exactly what they did by signing free-agent, Kelly Oubre Junior at the end of this summer.
Oubre and Harden do not have the best history together as it is rumored that one night during his time in Houston, Harden hosted a party where he invited Kelly to attend. Shortly after showing up, Oubre was rumored to have left with Harden's then girlfriend, Shylynn Gibson, whom Oubre is now married to, and has 2 kids with. What do you think? Will Harden get moved from the 76ers organization this year, or will we see another lackluster season of him and Joel Embiid as his window to win a championship shrinks in a hyper competitive Eastern Conference?
